Following our first well-attended workshop at Samohi, the next workshop will resume in Malibu on Saturday morning, March 25, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at John L. Webster Elementary School, 3602 Winter Canyon Road. (View Map)

(To reach the school, head north on Pacific Coast Highway; at Webb Way, turn away from the ocean toward Malibu City Hall. At the first stop sign, Civic Center Way, turn left. Within a couple of minutes, you’ll find Winter Canyon Road. Turn right and you’ll see the school just ahead. Call Urban Planner, Ayde Gonzalez, at (310) 450-8338 ext 100 for information on buses from Santa Monica and to arrange child care.)

For Workshop #2, the SMMUSD is providing free bus transportation from Santa Monica to Malibu and back again. If you are interested in taking the bus to Workshop #2, the SMMUSD bus will pick up passengers at 8:30 a.m. on Pearl Street near 16th Street, which is near the John Adams Middle School entrance. The bus will then proceed along Pico Boulevard to Santa Monica High School and arrive at the Big Blue bus stop on 4th Street near Pico Boulevard at approximately 8:45 a.m. At the conclusion of the workshop, the SMMUSD will depart from Malibu at 12:45 p.m. and arrive back in Santa Monica at Santa Monica High School at approximately 1:15 p.m., and at John Adams Middle School at approximately 1:30 p.m. If you anticipate taking the bus, please contact Urban Planner, Ayde Gonzalez, at agonzalez@concordia.com or call 310-450-8338x100 and leave a message. If you require wheelchair accessible transportation please contact Ayde no later than March 17, 2006.

While the first workshop focused on the facility examination by the architecture and engineering team and the survey of school personnel opinions, the second workshop will ask the question: where are we going? Community Planning Committee members will assess the school district in terms of best practices and joint-use case studies.

Sub-committees divided by grade level and geography will review school layouts from educational and joint-use perspectives and then present their conclusions to the larger group. Barriers that impact joint-use partnerships will also be considered, as well as strategizing on creative ideas for improving them.

Community members should attend these workshops to achieve a variety of positive outcomes, among them:

• Participating in an examination of facility needs
• Contributing their own ideas toward district-wide school improvement
• Having an impact on the thinking of District administrators and the Board of Education
• Making a difference in the lives of their children from both a short-term and long-term perspective
